Bowie’s Amendment Can Save Bowie’s Law Next Week on the Assembly Floor
SACRAMENTO, Calif., May 18, 2023 – Today Assemblyman Bill Essayli issued the following statement in response to the Assembly Appropriations Committee killing Bowie’s Law (AB 595):
“I am disappointed that the Assembly Appropriations Committee killed Bowie’s Law today, hiding behind the closed-door Suspense File process. It is shameful that the committee chose to side with lobbyists and kill Bowie’s Law without transparency, the same way Bowie was killed last year in secret,” remarked Assemblyman Essayli.
“I am not giving up and I remain determined. Therefore, next week I will bring Bowie’s Amendment to the Assembly Floor and give every Assemblymember the chance to vote up or down on on Bowie’s Law,” Asm. Essayli added.
Last year, a puppy named Bowie was suddenly euthanized at a Los Angeles County animal shelter, even after he was selected for adoption by a rescue. Bowie’s Law (AB 595) would have saved Bowie by requiring 72-hour public notice before an animal shelter can euthanize an adoptable pet.
Assemblyman Bill Essayli represents the 63rd Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the whole cities of Norco, Menifee, Lake Elsinore, and Canyon Lake, as well as portions of the cities of Eastvale, Riverside, and Corona.
