Assemblyman Essayli Introduces AJR 6 Calling for Immediate Pause to Artificial Intelligence Development

AJR 6 Urges U.S. Congress, President to Pause AI Development to Protect Humanity

SACRAMENTO, Calif., May 5, 2023 – Today Assemblyman Bill Essayli announced the introduction of his Assembly Joint Resolution 6, which urges the United States government to immediately pause the development of artificial intelligence systems for at least six months to develop safeguards for humanity.

“The future of humanity and how we live, work, and play, depends on thoughtful planning and management of the most advanced artificial intelligence systems. That is why I authored AJR 6 which calls on the United States government to immediately pause AI development for at least 6 months to allow time to develop necessary safeguards,” said Assemblyman Essayli.

“The rapid pace at which advanced AI systems like GPT-4 are developing is alarming and unprecedented. We must proceed with caution and consult with experts in the tech industry who are sounding the alarm about this technology,” added Assemblyman Essayli.

In March, Elon Musk joined the biggest names in tech urging the world’s leading artificial intelligence labs to pause the training of the new super-powerful systems for six months, saying that recent advances in AI present “profound risks to society and humanity.”

AJR 6 now awaits referral by the Assembly Rules Committee and may receive its first policy committee hearing in the coming weeks.

Assemblyman Bill Essayli represents the 63rd Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the whole cities of Norco, Menifee, Lake Elsinore, and Canyon Lake, as well as portions of the cities of Eastvale, Riverside, and Corona.
