SACRAMENTO, Calif., June 29, 2023 – Today Assemblyman Bill Essayli issued the following statement following the United States Supreme Court Decisions outlawing Affirmative Action in Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. (SFAI) v. President Fellows of Harvard and SFAI v. University of North Carolina:
“I applaud the United States Supreme Court for ruling to outlaw Affirmative Action and upholding the fundamental American ideal that all men and women are created equal and shall not be treated differently based on his or her race. As the son of immigrants, I was raised to follow the words of Martin Luther King, Jr. to treat people based on the content of their character, not the color of their skin.
“However, radical anti-American politicians remain committed to dividing people based on race and encouraging discrimination amongst them; I will always fight against these efforts.”
57% of California voters rejected Proposition 16 (2020) which sought to reinstate affirmative action in California. A poll from the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies also found that a majority of Independent and Moderate voters in California oppose affirmative action.
Assemblyman Bill Essayli represents the 63rd Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the whole cities of Norco, Menifee, Lake Elsinore, and Canyon Lake, as well as portions of the cities of Eastvale, Riverside, and Corona.
